If this sounds like a bit of an evasive answer, it’s certainly not meant to. I’ve written this guide to be as open and transparent as possible about how SEO agencies price their services. I’ll explain what influences the costs and give you some average SEO costs to help you set the right budget to get your desired results.
Please note, the views and opinions in this guide are based on my personal experience as an SEO professional. The figures quoted are a guide only, and our quotes are bespoke to each client’s business, objectives and current website performance.
How much does SEO cost?
I’ll run through some ballpark costs further on in the blog, but first let’s talk about the “cost of SEO”.
In our experience, many business owners are still reluctant to invest in SEO services. We get it. Organic SEO isn’t cheap. It can seem like a costly, long-term commitment with uncertain results, especially when compared to quicker, more immediate marketing tactics like paid ads, social media or PR.
Some of our new clients have reservations to begin with but are thankfully willing to take the leap. Fast forward 12-24 months, and they realise that the ‘cost’ was really a very wise investment.
An organic SEO investment generates lasting, sustainable growth. As your website climbs higher in search results, more people find and visit it. This increased organic traffic signals to search engines that your site is useful, which helps boost your rankings even more. As a result, even more people visit, and the cycle continues.
It’s by no means a ‘set and forget’ strategy; it requires constant input and maintenance. But the payoff is a brand-enhancing, future-proofed, lead-machine of a website. In fact, it could become your company’s most valuable business asset.

What determines the cost of SEO?
The cost of SEO services is influenced by lots of different factors.
The size, age and build of your website
Larger websites with lots of pages need more work to optimise. Older websites might have outdated structures that need technical updates. A well-developed site with a user-friendly design will generally be easier to improve, whereas a poorly developed site may require significant work to meet SEO standards.
The competitiveness of your industry or niche
In highly competitive industries, thousands of businesses are fighting at the top of search engine results pages for the same keywords, which means SEO needs to be more intensive and strategic.
For example, as an accountant in a big city, the competition for keywords like “accounting services [city]” or “best accountant for small businesses” is intense. The top-ranking websites are not there by accident – they are spending the big bucks to ensure they are seen.
Now, we don’t shy away from a challenge, but to compete on this scale requires an intensive effort. You’ll need a long-term, comprehensive SEO strategy to include regular website development, content updates, technical SEO improvements, and authoritative backlinks. Think between one and two years to build your website’s authority before you start to see results.
In contrast, if you specialise in a niche within your industry, say, “tax planning services for influencers”. This way you’ll be targeting your audience and selling your service- killing two birds with one stone. There’s likely to be less competition, and your SEO campaign could get quicker and more cost-effective results*.
*This depends on your SEO strategy and commitment to SEO services.
The goals of the SEO campaign
What you want to get out of your SEO campaign will also determine the time spent and the overall cost. For example, if you’re aiming for local visibility, it may need less investment compared to an SEO campaign seeking national or international reach.
Similarly, achieving top rankings for highly competitive, broad keywords demands more intensive work than targeting specific, less competitive phrases.
Your in-house capability
It may be that you have an in-house marketing team, which could save you money on external SEO services. A good agency will collaborate with your team and provide support and maybe even SEO training to fill any knowledge gaps.
Different SEO pricing models
UK SEO services are generally offered under a few different pricing models, each with pros and cons. Common models include hourly rates, monthly retainers, and one-time project fees. Understanding the different pricing models and how they can support your goals will help you set your budget
Monthly retainer SEO packages
A monthly SEO package with Targeted SEO ranges from £1,000 – £3,000 per month.
We don’t do cookie-cutter packages: our monthly packages are completely bespoke to the client’s needs and typically include a mix of a website audit, strategy, technical SEO, on-page SEO, content creation, off-page SEO, and web design and development.
The businesses we work with prefer the consistency of monthly retainers, where we include everything in one monthly invoice. This helps with monthly budgeting and forecasting. We are always transparent and upfront about the cost and offer regular updates and consultations on campaign performance.
One-off SEO projects
One-off SEO project costs can range from £1,000 – £20,000, depending on the project.
For businesses that may want a better understanding of SEO, or are just starting out, a one-off project could be a good option. At Targeted SEO, we offer one-off services like SEO audits to help you understand the performance of your website and what the next steps might be. Following the audit we offer actionable advice, and may clients then choose to start on a monthly retainer package.
While one-off projects can be a good way to get things moving, it can be hard to directly measure the ROI and success compared to a long-term campaign.
Hourly rates
Some SEO freelancers and consultants offer hourly SEO pricing, but it’s less common than monthly or project-based fees. While this can be affordable and offers flexibility, it’s harder to budget for as the results are more unpredictable than in a monthly campaign.
SEO is a long-term investment, and, in my opinion, hourly rates can encourage short-term fixes instead of the consistent work needed for sustained growth.

How much does Targeted SEO charge on a monthly basis?
The average cost of a monthly SEO retainer with Targeted SEO is between £1,200 – £3,000 plus VAT. The cost depends on your goals, budget and appetite for SEO. We don’t offer set packages, we will create a bespoke proposal following an in-depth consultation.
At Targeted SEO, we specialise in organic search engine optimisation; we are not a generalist digital marketing agency. Because we have a high level of expertise, an experienced and skilled SEO agency team, and a proven track record of delivering results, naturally you can expect to pay more vs a SEO consultant or freelancer.
How much does SEO cost for a small business in the UK?
For small businesses in the UK, SEO generally costs between £1,000 and £1,500 per month. I often recommend a monthly SEO retainer as the best choice for small businesses. With this, you get ongoing optimisation, regular updates, and continuous support to keep your site competitive. While one-time projects and hourly rates may handle immediate needs, a monthly retainer helps achieve the long-term growth and stability that small businesses truly need to succeed.
From my experience, budgets under £1,000 per month are generally less effective for small business SEO because quality optimisation requires time, expertise, and consistent effort. SEO for small businesses involves tasks like keyword research, content creation, local SEO, link building, and technical fixes—each demanding a solid investment to see meaningful progress. With limited budgets, results may be slow or minimal, making it hard for small businesses to compete. I’ve found that a budget above £1,000 per month provides the necessary resources to achieve sustainable, impactful results and improve visibility in a competitive market.
In SEO, beware of big promises on a small budget
As a business owner myself, I know the struggle. We all need to cut costs somewhere, but slashing your marketing spend can be a dicey move.
While it may be tempting to go for the cheapest SEO provider, cutting corners with SEO can backfire. Cheap SEO often involves unethical (and useless) practices like buying low-quality backlinks, using automated tools, or creating poor quality content. Not only does this have little effect, it can lead to algorithm penalties from search engines.
In the SEO world, I believe you get what you pay for and I urge clients not to throw away money on services promising miracles, quick fixes or guarantees. It is crucial to invest in high quality SEO services to avoid risking your website’s reputation and long-term visibility.
Unfortunately, I’m not just speculating here. We have had clients come to us that have been burned by cheap SEO providers, or more expensive ones who don’t pull their weight. This has perpetuated a certain lack of trust in our industry which the Targeted SEO team and I are determined to put right!
How much does an SEO freelancer cost?
SEO freelancers and consultants can offer a valuable route into the world of SEO if your budget is tight. If you go down this route highly recommend finding a freelancer with proven organic SEO experience with good reviews and case studies.
As they have lower overheads and have limited resources, you can expect to knock a zero off of agency prices. I cut my teeth as an SEO freelancer, and back then charged between £500 and £1,000 per month.

How much does AI SEO cost?
AI SEO typically costs from around £1,500 per month upwards, depending on the size of your website, the level of optimisation needed, and your AI visibility goals. AI SEO, also known as Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO), focuses on improving how your website is understood and referenced by AI search engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews.
The process involves optimising your site’s structure, content, and data so both humans and machines can interpret it clearly. This helps your brand appear as a trusted, cited source in AI-generated answers and featured snippets.
If you want to know how well your business is performing in AI search, request an AI SEO audit from Targeted SEO. We’ll show you where your AI visibility stands and how to improve it.
Tips on how to create an SEO budget
To budget effectively for SEO, start by identifying your business goals and the level of competition in your industry. Research different SEO pricing models and consult with multiple providers to get a sense of what your SEO needs will cost.
Be realistic about your budget, and remember that a successful SEO campaign takes time and patience. Allocate funds for at least 12 months of SEO work to give your campaign enough time to show results. Prioritise quality over quantity to ensure you get the most out of your SEO efforts.

What can a monthly Targeted SEO retainer include?
At Targeted SEO, we combine different SEO tools and techniques tailored to your goals and budget. Typically, we start with an SEO audit to understand how your website is performing, and what needs to be prioritised to meet your goals.
Here’s a taste of what your services your monthly retainer might include:
SEO friendly web design & Development
If your website is outdated, redesigning it with SEO in mind ensures it starts off with faster load times, mobile optimisation, and a smooth user experience—all essential for strong rankings and long-term SEO success.
Technical SEO
Technical SEO focuses on maintaining the technical side of your site, like improving speed, correcting errors (like 404 pages), ensuring proper indexing, optimising hosting, and managing crawl rates. These behind-the-scenes elements are crucial to make your site search engine friendly.
On-page SEO
On-page SEO can range from a fully managed package—which includes everything from hosting and web design to on-page, off-page, technical SEO, strategy, and content creation—to more targeted monthly consulting, auditing, and reporting services, tailored to your business’s needs.
SEO content & strategy
The first stage in creating great content is keyword research, a strategic process to identify and prioritise high-impact keywords that your target audience is searching for. It helps to align your content and services with actual customer needs to improve search rankings. We can then write valuable, search-optimised content that attracts website traffic, answers user questions, and builds your website’s authority within your industry over time.

Local SEO
Local SEO targets customers in your geographic area, helping your business appear in local searches and reach nearby customers who are ready to buy. This includes optimising for local searches, optimising your Google Business Profile, developing localised landing pages, citations, and in some cases digital PR.
AI SEO
Structuring your website and optimising your content for answer engines and large language models (LLMs) like Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and others is an important part of SEO. Your website may already be citied in AI if it has the core fundamentals of SEO and brand authority.
Conclusion
Understanding the cost of SEO in the UK is essential for businesses looking to enhance their online presence and drive sustainable growth. While initial investments might seem daunting, the long-term benefits of a well-executed SEO strategy far outweigh the costs.
