5 reasons why you should hire a smaller agency

As someone who has worked both client side for a large international brand and in-house for boutique agencies, I know that size really does matter when it comes to choosing an agency partner – and bigger doesn’t always mean better.

Below we look at the advantages of working with small creative agencies like Targeted SEO, and how they can be just as effective, if not more so, in helping you to achieve your business goals.

1. A big fish in a small pond

You may want to work with the big-name agencies; the ones whose shelves are littered with glittering awards and accolades; but do they want to work with you? Large agencies gravitate towards big well-known brands who are happy to spend large amounts of money on highly creative campaigns. If you do not have the marketing budget to compete, you could find yourself with a less experienced team and your account being neglected in favour of others.

A small agency, however, will not rest on their laurels and reputation and should make you feel special, no matter how big or small your budget may be. They are not out to win prizes but to produce the best work they can on behalf of their clients, because word of mouth and respect is their bread and butter. I have sat through many a pitch process where I have been wowed by a creative genius, won over by an award-winning writer and left speechless (and often bamboozled) by the knowledge imparted by an SEO mastermind. These “showponies”, as I like to call them, are the crème de la crème of agency talent, trotted out to impress you on the day and then never seen again.

What you see, is generally what you get with a smaller agency. There’s no hiding, no games, just consistent faces and the same voice at the end of the phone each time you call. Plus, you are nearly always dealing with the “top bod”, allowing you to discuss your thoughts and visions first hand, without it having to be filtered down through the ranks like a game of Chinese Whispers.

3. Specialism

In a large agency, everyone has their role. From an account manager to a strategist, analyst and creative, they are all experts in their field. This is great when you require all of the services above, but when only one skill set is needed for a particular project, you should beware, as you could find yourself contributing towards the overall cost of the team.

Small agencies often specialise in one area of marketing. Plus, with less red tape and office politics, they can openly embrace and encourage new ideas.

Bigger agencies tend to have bigger overheads. From their chic, city centre offices to their team of knowledgeable experts and generous expense accounts, it’s all reflected in the price that you pay.

Smaller agencies, in contrast, tend to work out of more modest premises, have fewer staff and offer a similar service at a fraction of the price. For what a boutique agency lacks in style, they more than make up for in substance.

So next time you are looking for the perfect agency partner, remember to look for that smaller agency that’s approachable, affordable, flexible and most importantly, passionate about your business needs.
